How to prepare for special event photography

There is definitely more to special event photography than just going around and taking photos of the occurrences during the event.  Good coverage and good photos usually not only involves solid knowledge about the technical aspects of photography, it also entails being well prepared for it.

When covering a special event, either as a professional or as an amateur doing it as a favor for a friend, it is always wise to ask for the schedule of activities that will occur.  This will help ensure that you do not miss important or critical moments that should be recorded in photos.  Asking for a list of VIPs or asking to be introduced to them will help ensure that you do not miss taking photos of anybody important.

One should always take the time to visit the venue before the date of the event.  Besides giving you the opportunity to familiarize yourself with the place you will be shooting in, this will allow you to see the lighting conditions first hand and to mark out the spots where you can place yourself to take photos of the important moments of the event.  It will also allow you to spot places which can provide interesting backgrounds for photos of groups or people.

Prior to the event itself make sure you have the right equipment for the job and that they are all working properly.  This means fresh batteries for your camera and lighting equipment as well as spares and an adequate amount of film or space on your memory card if you have a digital camera.  Bring spare memory cards if you can.

When you can, it is always good to have two cameras for special event photography.  The second camera can serve as a back-up in case one fails.  Fitting them with different kinds of lenses also eliminates the need to change lenses when covering the event.

Finally, keep in mind that while you are present at the event and there with a job to do, you have to do it in such a way as it does not disturb what is going on.  Be polite and unobtrusive and remember to wear clothes which is appropriate for the event you will be covering.
