Do you believe that a bride-to-be has to wear a white dress to her wedding? 
Well think again, back in the day in ancient times the brides were wearing
brightly coloured wedding dresses which signified joy. Only when Queen Victoria wore white to her wedding as to signify her status did white dresses become popular in Western cultures.  These white dresses never signified purity until the Christian churches put a label to them.

Wedding bands were orignally made of braided grass but were eventually replaced in the 15th century by durable metals.  These only went out of fashion when diamonds arrived upon the scene, which signifies a strong and valuable commitment.

There used to be an ancient belief that the newly-wed couple could bring good luck to people they touched.  Couples still believe in this and usually prefer ‘to make the rounds’
and greet their guests after the wedding ceremony.

‘You may kiss the bride’ a phrase which is known throughout the world.  This used to be an ancient Roman tradition in which they believed a marriage would only be legal once the couple kissed.

Years ago, a woman belonged to her father until she got married and then became her
husband’s property. At her wedding day her father would literally speaking be
“giving her away” and so transfer ownership to her new husband.

In the Roman mythology there is a God called Juno.  Who is considered to be the ruler of childbirth.  This is why weddings held in June are so popular.

Lastly there is an old English saying which is still incorporated into many weddings which you might
recognise: “Something old, something new, something borrowed, something, something blue”  The last
part of the rhyme is now left out and it went “and a sixpence in your shoe”.Something old usually turns out to be grandma’s pearl earrings or mom’s necklace.  New usually symbolises their new home in the future which can include a veil ora boquet of silk flowers.  Possibilities really are endless…  Happiness is symbolized by something borrowed. This could be anything which has made the owner happy like your parent’s wedding song or maybe mom-in-law’s brooch.  Blue signifies fidelity, good fortune and love.  The garter often has a blue bow and lace on it or you could use something like sapphire earrings, blue flowers like irises or even blue lingerie…

I’ve also heard if you don’t want it to rain on your wedding day, you should put a broom in a tree and a
fork in the ground.
