Babies grow into adult people who get to experience the blessing of getting their own little babies, and any babies are small people dependant on others. They haven’t grown into little kids or toddlers yet, who can at least give some smiles when tickled, what they give are completely spontaneous and it’s then when we capture all their magic.

They lose that newborn look after awhile, and they become much more aware of their surroundings when a little bit older, but when very small, as in a few days old they can be molded into poses. At Louise Diesel Photography, The Real Life Studio, we have a maternity/newborn package which has us taking photos of the pregnant mommy at about 34 weeks – when the tummy is nice and round, and before a point of total discomfort. Then when the little one is born, the proud new parents bring them back for their first shoot, and we have some very proud fathers holding a little baby with a serene look in their eyes.

It’s quite an intimate, personal shoot and it’s a wonderful remembrance of a special time in parent’s life, the whole journey of the little one about to join us soon. We would recommend this package to anyone, it’s our most successful package and we’re honoured to be part of the first moments of baby’s life.

high-key photos of newborn babies

I have always loved newborn babies, ever since I was old enough not to be a one anymore.  Ask my sister and she will tell you that I will walk up to people in the shopping centre and tell them that their little newborn or baby is just the cutest little thing ever :-)

Once while shopping for books, I found this fantastic book called “Sleeping Beauties”, filled with high-key newborn baby photos and I instantly fell bought it and fell in love with this particular style of newborn photos.  Of course I had to shop around on my weekend for a few new props like textured materials (which are textures but still soft enough to place a newborn on) as well as baskets, a woven magazine holder and much more…

I was so excited that I phoned up a friend on that very same day and scheduled a photoshoot with her little darling Izabella who would be 16 days old on the day of this particular newborn photoshoot.  And so the day of the shoot finally arrived and the weather was miserable… But I was my mind was put to rest as we have a powerful aircon to heat the studio to just the perfect temperature to ensure this little angel woudl be perfectly comfortable.

Because this photoshoot was all about experimenting with the new props and lighting the shoot took roundabout three hours, with baby having a feed or two inbetween and a little picnic snacks for us ;-)

So have a look at our works of art and my new samples of high-key newborn photography and let me know what you think?

I found this wonderful quote on the internenet today and thought it would be perfect to add onto our blog about newborn baby photography :”A new baby is like the beginning of all things, hope, a dream of possibilities…”

This  quote is exactly what makes each newborn baby photoshoot so unique and magical.  Having photographed a significant number of newborn babies in our studio the wonderful promise they bring never ceases to amaze me.  They are so beautifully pure and this is what we portray in our photos pf these little people….

Having a newborn baby in the house literally turns your house and routine upside down (and that’s probably how you will feel for quite a while) The first few weeks of their lives just whizzes past you as you are getting to know them and coping with sleep deprivation.  Don’t think you are alone if you feel a little bit nervous when taking your little one out of the house for the first time, to our studio, as this is a perfectly natural feeling for parents with new babies :-) and so we take the utmost of care to heat the studio perfectly and keep your little one (as well as our new mommy and daddy) extremely comfortable as we talk you through each of our poses.

And if your little newborn baby needs to have a “lunch break” in between we really don’t mind as it’s really hard work to be such a perfect model :-)

The ideal time to have your baby’s newborn photos taken is when they are between 5-10 days old.  They are still as comfortably flexible as a gymnast but “old enough” to feel safe when they are unwrapped.

We consider it an absolute pleasure and honour to take the first photos of your newborn angel…

tips on newborn photography

We are often asked the question:”When is the best time to have my newborn baby photographed…?”  In my experience I wold say when your baby is between five and ten days old.  This gives mom and dad some time to get to know their little one and toget comfortable with them and their new routine.  When your newborn baby is younger than five days, they have only been out of their safe tight little cocoon for a short period of time so it makes it extremely hard to do any kind of nude and “Anne Geddes” tupe of photos for the simple reason that they do not feel “safe”.  Which results in them being very niggly whicn in turn stresses mom and dad out.

As your newborn baby becomes older than ten days they tend to have longer periods of time which they are awake.  Which also makes it very difficult to capture those typical “Anne Geddes newborn photos”.  In my opinion newborn babies should have their newborn photoshoot when they are between5-10 days old.  They are still very flexible (which makes posing easier – they tend to be like this up to about 15 days old)  They are more easily settled, meaning you can pose them, wrap them tightly and then remove the “comfort wrapping” and they will still be comfortable.  And this time also just gives mom a little bit of time to recuperate after the birth.

Tips for your newborns first photoshoot:

Ensure that the room the photos are taken in has been heated (and temperature must be kept consistent  throughout the shoot)  Undress your little one at home (only keep their nappies on) and bring them to the studio wrapped only in a blanket. And remember to keep an open mind, taking newborn photos normally takes anything from 1-2 hours (sometimes even longer…)  Keep in mind that these tine babies have just gotten into a routine of feed, nappy change and sleep and now we are changing “life as they know it”  So they tend to get a little niggly halfway through but it’s not a train smash.  Half a feed later and they are as content as a hippo in water and like putty in your hands :-)

Babies, will always be cute, and we- HAVE to capture that. It’s such a waist to have those terrific toothless smiles, chubby cheeks and soft little bodies, and not photograph them. For your little person it could be quite new experience, even with maternity shoots, we find the mommies tell us how they can feel the baby move inside, as they definitely sense the light.

Studio lights are very bright, they are calibrated to sunlight, which is white, stark light, and so your little one could be a bit intimidated by all of it, and start to get a bit fussy. We really try and not push them beyond their limits as they are still so small, but we advise parents to bring baby when they have fed, and have gone down for a nap, we want them as comfortable as possible, as this will obviously make for the best photos.

Newborns keep their newborn-look only for awhile, after that they start to be aware of things around them to a degree, and wriggle a bit more. We have a package in our list, that is a combined maternity- and newborn shoot, and we ask the new mommies & daddies to bring their baby, as soon as they can after birth. We understand that it isn’t always possible; sometimes baby has to stay in hospital for various reasons and getting used to this little person’s new routine in a household, is quite a challenge. But when you can, bring baby, as new, and young as possible, and you will be guaranteed to great, stunning professional photos here at Louise Diesel Photography studio, The Real Life Studio.

Over the years I have learnt that 9 out of 10 newborn babies (boy or girl) will look like theirs fathers.  I have now come to the conclusion that this is nature’s way to ensure new daddies fall in love with their newborns the moment they lay eyes on them (How can you not love something so tiny who looks exactly like you…)

There is a very special bond a man shares with his new baby.  Looking at these photos you will see it with your own eyes.  Have you ever seen a guy handle anything so tenderly?  Oh yes, and the daddies are normally the ones with the magic touch J

The hat in the photo is Molise’s “DADDY HAT”, that is what he calls it.  He asked me if we could please maybe take just one photo with his hat and I love the fact that it came out so beautifully.  Bringing props to your photoshoot is what truly personalizes your photoshoot.  Every time they see this hat they will picture this newborn photo in their mind…

We recommend that you try and bring your newborn baby for their newborn photos usually within the first 10 days.  This is when they are still little sleepy heads and we can “mould” them any which way as they are kind of like Jello (You will know exactly what I mean if you have ever tried to hold a newborn baby against your chest so that you can still see their faces…)

It's all about feeling comfortable at your shootUsing appropriate props to add to the shootFeeling secure at our boudoir shoot

Using a woman's lines in boudoir photography

There had been no other point of inspiration, other than the female shape in millennia of art, as it is just so powerful and nothing but truly beautiful, no matter what the woman’s race, weight or even age. We love boudoir shoots, each one is different, but still the common denominator is that we’re working with the wonder of the female form and we try and accentuate that as much as we can, with our lighting- and posing set-ups, and to keep it as flattering as possible.

Louise Diesel Photography studio, in Randhart, Alberton, is equipped not only with professional equipment for our shoots, but also with air-con with which we try and regulate the temperature as the situation needs it, sometimes we need it a bit warmer for small or newborn babies, or on hot summer days, the coolness is much appreciated. So when we’re doing boudoir shoots, it’s all about having our lovely subject as relaxed and comfortable as possible.

We mostly use the black background; it has a way of creating much more mood in the shots and we try and pose the subjects so that their best features show off. Beautiful shoes make for a stunning “prop”, so paired together with flowing arms and stunning legs, we create stunning shape. We astonish all the women who have had a boudoir shoot with us, when they see the final product, so we want to encourage all to come and have a boudoir shoot done in beautiful underwear or sleepwear, here at Louise Diesel Photography studio – it’s an experience you will enjoy. Tasteful, comfortable & beautiful.
