tips on newborn photography

We are often asked the question:”When is the best time to have my newborn baby photographed…?”  In my experience I wold say when your baby is between five and ten days old.  This gives mom and dad some time to get to know their little one and toget comfortable with them and their new routine.  When your newborn baby is younger than five days, they have only been out of their safe tight little cocoon for a short period of time so it makes it extremely hard to do any kind of nude and “Anne Geddes” tupe of photos for the simple reason that they do not feel “safe”.  Which results in them being very niggly whicn in turn stresses mom and dad out.

As your newborn baby becomes older than ten days they tend to have longer periods of time which they are awake.  Which also makes it very difficult to capture those typical “Anne Geddes newborn photos”.  In my opinion newborn babies should have their newborn photoshoot when they are between5-10 days old.  They are still very flexible (which makes posing easier – they tend to be like this up to about 15 days old)  They are more easily settled, meaning you can pose them, wrap them tightly and then remove the “comfort wrapping” and they will still be comfortable.  And this time also just gives mom a little bit of time to recuperate after the birth.

Tips for your newborns first photoshoot:

Ensure that the room the photos are taken in has been heated (and temperature must be kept consistent  throughout the shoot)  Undress your little one at home (only keep their nappies on) and bring them to the studio wrapped only in a blanket. And remember to keep an open mind, taking newborn photos normally takes anything from 1-2 hours (sometimes even longer…)  Keep in mind that these tine babies have just gotten into a routine of feed, nappy change and sleep and now we are changing “life as they know it”  So they tend to get a little niggly halfway through but it’s not a train smash.  Half a feed later and they are as content as a hippo in water and like putty in your hands :-)
