Family shoots are still a favourite to do because a family usually consists out of a few different members, all in different stages of their life. With little children, they just have this way about them, and we get a lot of joy from them. This little boy had a bit of a nap before their shoot started which was a bit of a concern for mom as we know toddlers can get cranky when they are woken up and then has to suddenly smile. We kept him calm and then daddy’s skill kicked in, as daddies have great magic with little kids, and he just started playing with him – and we got the most amazing smiles from this beautiful little boy, which made mommy’s heart very warm inside.

We are a professional studio – meaning from the first moment you get to speak with us and want to make a booking we give good service, sending you the necessary information to make sure you are aware of what to bring, what you can expect and also what to wear  and when you come for your shoot we handle it the best way possible, knowing that little kids go through phases, and could be difficult. Each situation is unique and there isn’t a set formulae that would work – all that seems to get some results, is to stay calm, relax, and treat them with a little bit of extra love.

We have nothing but an amazing diversity in South Africa, this truly is the rainbow nation, with so many nationalities living here, and each one unique to its own tradition, and ways of doing. One of our most colourful nationalities is the Indian nation, with their brightly colourful culture.

This Mom and daughter team has been for a shoot with us before, and this time, her daughter brought these stunning Saris’s along, which isn’t the easiest thing to work with as you have to photograph a big piece of material and still have a good flow to it. These were really extra-ordinary, as she bought them in India, and she rocked them fabulously. Having her mother there calmed her nerves a bit, as she wasn’t too sure what to expect, and once we started, she just seemed to fall into the flow of the shoot, and we got THE most amazing images. With some shoots, you have to just go with where the shoot takes you, it will control you as photographer, and you have to work with what follows next, but with others, you might have a good idea on what you want to achieve, and you set out to pose or direct the subject in such a way, and because we mostly work with people who aren’t professional models, we play a big part in how the shoot turns out. THIS shoot, was such a big success, as she just magically made it happen, and we got images that are striking, shows of her heritage and cultural colours, and her personality as a woman.

Having fun is what keeps us young and our studio has evolved so much that it isn’t at all about client’s coming for a shoot, us doing a job, and them leaving. We try and get them involved in the preparation process, urging them to bring their own props or things that they feel are symbolic to them and unique to who they are. Whether its soccer gear  or their dogs. This Mom and daughter team was such a hoot, I really enjoyed the energy between the two of them.They seemed to flow so well with all their  poses and they  enjoyed  themselves tremendously… mission accomplished.

These are the types of things that make for extra-ordinary unique one-of-a-kind photos. We make sure to get everyone smiling and happy for the photos of the family. But with the younger children who live in imaginary worlds and have their own unique mannerisms and quirks, we want to get the best out of them and many times doing it in this way gets great reactions. Next time when you want to do a family shoot, you could even consider hiring some costumes, or bringing fun props – and then, let’s go play!

Those moments when people laugh right out of their stomachs are the moments when I feel our work is already done. This mom- and daughter team had been for a shoot with us before.They are old friends of our studio and mom just wanted another shoot with her daughter as they are just crazy about each other and love spending  a lot of quality time together. This shoot was for the daughter mostly, where we showed off a bit of their cultural heritage by her wearing amazingly coloured Sari’s and then we did some with just her and her mother. All they did was giggle. We were all in stitches.

I found it very special to be able to experience their fun moments with them. They were able to bring their special bond to the studio and enjoy their time with me. I don’t even know everything they said to each other but they were laughing constantly and it made for such great images. The one image is an all time favourite of mine.

Our studio is very blessed with so many of our clients wanting to share their maternity experience with us. A maternity shoot is a very special shoot because it captures the time when baby inside is still very much a part of Mommy. A baby bump is a beautiful way to celebrate the woman form.

This family already has a beautiful little 3-year old girl, with the most amazing red hair, and she made the shoot extra special with her little quirks. Her father was very funny and made her laugh the whole time. Even though most families own a good camera, we still understand the need for professional maternity photos.As it isn’t only about taking photos, it’s about capturing certain moments in time, in a very professional, extra-ordinary way. We’re honored to share in the maternity-time, and births of all of these Mommies- and babies to be and hope to serve our clients with our great photography for a long time to come.
