Most people like to celebrate their birthday in some style or another, be it a party with friends and family, or going on a trip for the significance of getting older. I recently did a shoot for a close family member, whose idea it was to celebrate her birthday by having all the close women in her life photographed in a boudoir/nude style for a birthday calendar to keep for years to come.

As women, she felt we should celebrate our bodies, and feel comfortable in our own skin, no matter what age we are or how we look. It’s always very satisfying to do a shoot with people – a wonderful subject to work with – and be able to get their personalities to shine through. I always make it a mission to give different people to right amount of charisma just to pull that special something out of them.

In our line of work, lighting plays the biggest factor – it’s the medium that we play with. It’s what makes images burn on film, or the digital plate in cameras, and we can play around with it and manipulate it to create shots that takes your breath away. It is used strategically in shoots like boudoir – or nudes, because the body should only be shown in the best possible way, and the make the woman in front of it, as comfortable as possible. We only want positive images, and therefore we take our work very seriously, with a tad of fun, because we love what we do as well.

When it’s the dead of winter, and it’s very cold, and the landscape is very dull outside, few people want to come out for a shoot that requires you taking your clothes off, and having some shots done in your gorgeous underwear. Boudoir shoots have been a trend that has taken by storm, and what an amazing ego-boost for any woman.

A boudoir shoot is a shoot done in mostly underwear, or beautiful nightclothes, and is all about celebrating the female form, and making magic of who you already are. In photography, we play with light and the way it bends, and shapes a subject. Professional boudoir photoshoot

We encourage people to bring their own personality as much as they would dare, to the studio. Because when you bring with you elements of what and who you are, it makes for great photos, as you are comfortable, and when you’re comfortable in front of the camera, something just lights up inside of you. The camera is your closest friend, it shows everything very faithfully, and when you are tense or putting on a pretentious smile, the camera picks it up, and the audience will notice it as well.

When I recently did a group shoot with a whole bunch of ladies wanting to make a calendar of their images, I encouraged them to bring something that represents them, and what great fun we had, and what amazing captivating images I got.

With a boudoir shoot, which is basically a shoot with lovely underwear or nightclothes, the women are on their nerves in anyway, not knowing what to expect, and it’s quite a big exposure to get undressed in front of the photographer. It’s very much our responsibility to make our subjects as comfortable as possible, having a good knowledge of good lighting and your equipment, and a great deal of charm reassuring your clients that they will receive an amazing product. Ideal Christmas presents

The backdrop in a studio isn’t necessarily the most comfortable place for most people. Most people, are quite intimidated by it, and do not know how to pose naturally. The camera has way of picking up anything artificial or pretentious, and will see when someone is forcing a smile, or their shoulders are in a stiff pose. We try and do everything that we can to make our clients comfortable in front of the camera, and our clients become our friends. In the while we spend with them, we get to form a bond, and something special is exchanged, as people now had to trust you with their image, and that you will make them look fantastic.

With our boudoir and nude-shoots, we get ladies of all ages coming to see how it all works, and we get to surprise them every time. We play with lighting and poses, and guide our “models” to pose in a way that is natural for them, and we see and judge what will work best for them, as we ultimately want to provide our clients with a quality product that they can be proud to show off, and feel comfortable with.

Sensual boudoir photos

A nude is definitely a very liberal, brave shoot to do, but one of the most beautiful ways to highlight the female form, literally and figuratively.

South Africa is still very much a conservative society, and having a nude shoot done, might be completely beyond anyone’s comfort zone, but knowing you’re in the company of photographer’s who will nothing but make you look fabulous and take your breath away with images that you can be proud of.

The human form has distinctive shape to it, and it’s recognized anywhere, even if in shadow or silhouette, and a nude is the perfect way to light all the beautiful little parts that make up the outlines of your body. John Mayer sang that the body is wonderland, in through our lens, it most certainly is. We can do the most amazing things with light, and we always realize how many people, especially women, are unsure of their bodies, especially in the nude, so we strategically light to have it looks flawless and make it drift into infinity.
