Event Photography Tips

Event photography can be a very lucrative field for a professional photographer. It will however, require some practice and experience before one can become adept at it.  Here are some tips to help you along.

As a professional who will be engaging in event photography you will be expected to cover several types of events such as weddings, corporate events, sports events, birthday parties, bar mitzvahs, baptisms, and parties.  While covering each type of event has its unique challenges there are some things which you can do which will help you no matter what kind of event you intend to cover.

When being contracted to cover an event, it would always be wise to ask for a schedule of activities and a list of VIPs.  This way you will not miss the moments nor the people your client wishes to be photographed.

One of the things you can do prior to covering an event and after having been contracted to shoot it is to visit the venue.  This is to allow you to do the following:

  • Become familiar with how the layout of the place and its geography.  This is especially useful if the event is going to be held outdoors.
  • See firsthand the lighting conditions in the venue.  This way you will be able to take measures in case lighting is inadequate or inappropriate.  This will also allow you to take test shots to see how the place actually looks like in pictures.
  • This will also allow you to find the ideal spots where you can shoot during the event as well as interesting backgrounds you can use.

Prior to the event, always make sure you have the right equipment and that it is in good working order.  For events indoors, you may need extra lighting equipment.  For sports events, a zoom lens and a fast shutter setting will help you cover the action better.  Make sure that you have fresh batteries for your lighting equipment and camera and that they are functioning properly.  Ensure that you have an adequate amount of film to last you throughout the duration of the event.  If you are using a digital camera, make sure you have adequate free memory on the memory card of your  camera and bring extras if you can.
